Helping Keep Hope Close to Home
Since 2016, the Johnstown Walk of Hope has helped local people and businesses support their friends and neighbors going through cancer and cancer treatments. All donations stay in the area, and every penny goes to local people and families. In 2019, more than 80 patients undergoing treatment in Cambria County received financial assistance as a result of the event, which raised more than $55,000 last year.
Now, organizers are working to build on that momentum and create a Walk of Hope Fund in Somerset County. For the past year or more, UPMC Hillman Somerset cancer patients have had to travel to Johnstown for chemotherapy and radiation treatments. While in treatment, many of these patients were able to receive financial assistance for medications, overdue medical bills, household expenses, and other needs through the Johnstown Walk of Hope (JWOH).
Now that cancer treatment services soon will return to Somerset County, creating a Somerset Walk of Hope Fund has become a priority. Marlene Singer, JWOH coordinator, and other volunteers will be reaching out to businesses and organizations in the county to build support and launch the new initiative. If you’d like to contribute to this new effort built from a highly successful model in Cambria County and give to a cause that will directly impact Somerset County residents, CLICK HERE.
