JOHNSTOWN — On Thursday July 16, 2015 the Greater Prospect Store in Johnstown officially opened its U.S. Postal Service.
“This is just the beginning for us,” said Sylvia King, coordinator. “We’ve accomplished a lot in this first year and we have a lot of big ideas still to come.”
“It’s incredible to see the community work together to make this possible,” said Mike Kane, President, Community Foundation for the Alleghenies.
The store itself was a project that took several years to get started and with the help of grants through the Foundation it was made possible. Thanks to dedicated community members and their hard work the GPS Store and Clean and Green laundry opened a year ago. Since then the idea of the adding postal service came up for discussion. A majority of residents surveyed said it would be nice to have a mailbox in the Prospect neighborhood since the closest one was downtown.
“This is what the community wanted and needed,” said King. “Now, they have it.”
The store is designed to encourage healthy habits, and provide a base for community awareness. Customers can do their wash, go shopping, buy or order food to go and now mail letters, packages, and buy stamps. The store is open from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and is located at the top of the Prospect Bridge.
“This store just shows what the community can accomplish together, when they put their minds to it,” said King.
