Major General Charles T. Menoher
General Menoher was the son of Civil War veterans and was born in Johnstown Pennsylvania in 1862. He graduated from West Point in 1886, along with John J. Pershing who later he would serve alongside in WW I. Early in his military career, he served in Cuba and in the Philippines during the Spanish – American War.
During WWI, General Menoher assumed command of the 42nd Division, Rainbow Division, where he participated in the Champagne- Marne offensive , the Saint Mihiel and Meuse Argonne offensive to end the war. At the conclusion of the war, he received the Distinguished Service Medal in addition to several citations and awards from foreign countries. At war’s end, he was succeeded in his position by Brigadier General Douglas MacArthur.
Following WWI he became the first director and chief of the Army Air Force. He was then promoted to Major General in 1921 and commanded the 1st Infantry Division and the 24th Infantry Division before retiring in year 1926.
General Menoher married Nannie Pearson and they had 3 sons who attended West Point and had long and distinguished military careers.
Following WWI there was a big victory parade in Johnstown to honor General Menoher. Also, there is a major highway in the Johnstown area named after him.
